Identifying jaguar-human conflicts
in Salta province, Argentina
November de 2008
It was developed in an approximately 325,000 hectares
area of mountains forests or Yungas. There, near the Baritú National
Park,
Laguna Pintascayo Provincial Park and Nogalar National Reserve, 79
livestock herds were identified with different situations of conflict
with jaguar, basicaly because of its attacks on cattle.
We analyzed the data collected and evaluated possible
alternative solutions to the problem.
Three are the main
causes of the serious decline of the Jaguar in Argentina, in this
order:
1. Habitat deterioration
and loss.
2. Direct hunting.
3. Natural prey declining.
Through this work we try to find
solutions to the second problem, in the northern region of Salta
province, between the bolivian border, wich presents a greater chance
of survival for our Jaguars.
Objectives:
1 .- To know the
characteristics of the conflict in each area.
2 .- Providing background
information to implement concrete actions to drastically reduce or
resolve this conflict that seriously threats this still healthy Jaguar
population.
Methodology:
We visited conflict areas, researching with
farmers and residents about the existing conflicts, knowing about the
vision of the problem and assessing the necessary steps (realistic and of
possible implementation in the field) to eliminate or drastically
reduce the conflict and the hunting of Jaguars.
This required to travel long distances
were domestic cattle moves, stay for long periods in places without
comforts and identify the places where more frecuently attacks occur
and their causes.

of "strategic interest" for this Conservation Unit,
providing their full support.
